The Collects for the Liturgical Year
The term "collect" designates a prayer that sums up, concludes, or pulls together (collects) the thoughts of a preceding litany or devotion. The collects for each Sunday reinforce the current theme of the liturgical season and serve as a reminder of the Church’s central act of corporate worship in the Eucharist.
Each collect follows this general pattern of organization:

O LORD, we
beseech thee mercifully to receive the prayers of thy handmaidens who
call upon thee; and grant that they may both perceive and know what
things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to
fulfill the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
